I have never given Aussie hip hop the time of day. Possibly this had something to do with being a kiwi and not wanting to admit that Australia does do some things quite well besides sunshine, surf, Sunday sessions and spin bowling. That and sometimes the unmistakable Aussie twang in the vocals can just be too much. However, disregarding Australian hip hop due to an average initial experience and a few preconceived ideas is a pretty ignorant attitude. Imagine if a foreigner’s first look at NZ hip hop was Savage’s track Let me see your hips swing? Shame. Being immersed in Oz culture once again and having grown out of my naïve ways, the variety and depth of Australian music has astonished me. I feel like I have just scratched the surface and am finding new and awesome sounds every day. With this in mind, I will put all trans-tasman rivalry aside and give credit where credit’s due.
